Description

Our Babysitters In-Training course is one of Canada’s best introductory options for youth aged 11–15 looking to develop important skills in caregiving, basic first aid, and babysitting basics. This course is for youth who want to learn the skills to provide care to children in a variety of situations—whether helping siblings at home or supporting prospective families as a babysitter.

Participants will explore the responsibilities of a babysitter, including child safety, diapering, play supervision, and the care of babysitters themselves (like setting boundaries and self-care). The course also teaches first aid, how to prevent and respond to emergencies, and when to call an ambulance if needed. By the end, youth will gain the first aid and caregiving skills they need to feel confident, prepared, and capable of handling real-life situations.

Whether taken as a next step after a Home Alone course or on its own, this course helps build skills to promote safe, responsible babysitting—making it an ideal community project or personal milestone for prospective caregivers.

FAQ

The course is designed for children aged 10 and older who are interested in becoming responsible and capable babysitters.

The course runs for approximately 4.5 hours, filled with hands-on activities and lessons that cover a wide range of babysitting responsibilities and emergency preparedness.

If your child is responsible, mature, and interested in caring for kids, they may be ready. The course will give them the skills and confidence needed to babysit safely.

Upon completing the course, participants will receive a course manual for future reference and a certificate of completion, which they can use to show parents they are prepared and qualified babysitters.

Participants should bring a packed lunch, water bottle, and any personal items. Please note that the Babysitting training course includes all necessary materials, including a first aid hero manual, to help participants practice skills like handling a splinter, treating a nosebleed, and responding to seizures and emergency procedures.

No, this is not a Red Cross course. We have been Red Cross training partners in the past and love their first aid courses. However, in our experience, the Red Cross program is not as practical and interactive as we’d like. We have created our own program that incorporates first aid skills but have included skills that will help a new babysitter fulfill their role.

Participants will gain a strong understanding of a babysitter’s role, including how to care for children of different ages, manage child behavior, and ensure the safety and well-being of the children in their care.

Yes, a key part of the course is teaching participants how to respond confidently to various emergency situations, including medical issues, fires, and other unexpected events that may arise while babysitting.

The course focuses on basic first-aid, such as treating bumps and bruises, managing insect stings, and responding to asthma or anaphylaxis. This practical knowledge ensures your child has the skills they need to care for younger children safely and effectively, without overwhelming them with more advanced medical topics

The course is fun and interactive, offering hands-on learning and role-playing to ensure participants learn essential child care and emergency response skills. Upon completion, your child will be certified in basic first aid and equipped with the confidence and skills they need to take care of younger children.

Yes, upon completing the Canada Safety Council Babysitting course, your child will receive a certificate of completion, which they can use to show parents they are prepared and qualified babysitters. This certification is recognized across Canada and highlights their readiness to handle basic first aid, CPR, and common childcare responsibilities. The certificate serves as proof of their training and ability to care for children safely.
